Midweek racing comes from Happy Valley on Wednesday with the eight race meeting getting underway at 12.15pm with the feature race of the day being race 1, The Class 2 Cheung Hong Handicap over 5 furlongs. Later on in the afternoon we can also look forward to the trophy race on the card, race 6, The Class 3 Community Chest Handicap Cup over 9 furlongs due off at 2.45pm.

We kick things off early on the card today with the next best bet (NB)  CHARITY WINGS  running in race 2  The Class 4 Oi Man Handicap over 1 mile (1650m), due off at 12.45pm.

The Danny Shum-trained runner hasn’t the most of prolific strike rates with 3 wins from 28 outings in Hong Kong. In a field whereby only one of his opponents has shown winning form of late this represents a great opportunity for the 6-year-old to add to his tally.

With Shum presently setting the early pace at the top of the trainers’ championship enlisting the services of champion jockey Zac Purton, fresh from riding a four timer at Sha Tin on the weekend, the gelding is certainly going to have his supporters today.

There appears to be little early pace in the contest, and I expect to see Purton push the selection forward to be on the frontend with possibly only the likes of the 6 and 8 for company.

All three wins to date have been over C&D and he won here last season off a 3lb higher mark (55), thus he looks a major player here off his current mark of 52.

My value selection today is my  each-way bet (EW) on the card,  VERY RICH MAN  who  runs in race 5, The Class 4 Shun Lee  Handicap over 6 furlongs, due off at 2.15pm.

The Peter Ho-trained runner returns to class 4 company where he won when he last competed and whilst he will have to win off a career high mark, 2lb higher today, I feel he could be competitive and represents some value.

Over the last 3 seasons the selection has competed well in his first outings including 1 win and a couple strong efforts whereby he narrowly missed placing. In being drawn in gate 5 this front runner should be able to get across and grab the rail early without using up too much gas.

With a few the field likely to be sent forward early, including the likes of the 8,11 and 12, this should be run at an honest enough speed. Providing that Dylan Mo can get a tune out of the bay gelding, much like he did when making all the last time in this grade, he won’t make it easy for his rivals to get by.

My best bet (NAP)  on the card,  RELIABLE TEAM  goes  in Race 7,  The Class 3 Wah Fu Handicap over 6 furlongs, due  off at 3.15pm.

The Frankie Lor-trained runner made quite an impression when last out as he surged clear of his rivals in the final furlong to win handsomely by a good 3 lengths.

He returns today aiming to make complete a hattrick of wins in his first 3 starts and despite being raised 11lb by the handicapper and coming up into class 3 for the first time I see no reason not to be confident of another bold performance today.

When you consider that both wins have come on the tight city track and from slightly higher draws than he has received today, he should have no problems coming across to sit up on the pace again. The pace is sure to be genuine enough with the likes of the 4,11 and 12 all having shown a preference to be ridden hot from the stalls.

This lightly raced 4-year-old looks the type who will be competing at a higher level very soon and as such should be more than capable of going very close again today.
