Paul Quigley's US Racing Preview

Delaware and Thistledown are live on Monday night, but Paul Quigley fancies Finger Lakes, where he found a bucket of winners last week- read his analysis and watch it live on Sky Sports Racing.

The Monday night action comes from Delaware Park, Thistledown and Finger Lakes, where I’ll be handicapping the latter track, which was good to me last week.

The Stateside Preview - Finger Lakes Races 1 to 8 for Monday 21 September 2020

Finger Lakes Race 1 (6.10pm)

Claiming $5,000 – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of a race in 2020 with exceptions – 1 Mile - Dirt

UNPARALLELED (2) will be odds-on for the opener. She made a fine return to Finger Lakes after a couple of races at Parx back in the winter. The five-year-old ran second to a fair type over six furlongs early last month. All her form including four victories last year came in route races. Her workouts have improved over the last few weeks. She doesn’t meet the strongest group and will be hard to beat.

Unparalleled (2) is a front-end type but there may be three rivals for the lead. A destructive speed duel and Trapper Jane (3) may be a late threat. She ran evenly on her return and was totally overmatched in her one start since. Chornayah Kracota (7) finished well behind her last time. In fairness, she was used up on the front, and will likely have the favourite and Thanxforlastnite (5) to deal with early on here.

Andromeda's Child (4) is another to come off a clunker. It was her first start of 2020. She won twice last year and may get pace to chase down.

Selection: Unparalleled (2)

Finger Lakes Race 2 (6.37pm)

Claiming $5,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of a race in 2020 with exceptions – 5 ½ Furlongs - Dirt

Dean Verdile (1) made a highly encouraging return last month. He ran third in a starter optional claimer over course and distance. The winning time was decent and the pair that beat him were good yardsticks. Now dropping in class into a restricted claimer, he is without question the horse to beat. The rail can be feast or famine at this track but odds of 5/2 are seem very fair.

Dean Verdile (3) may have company on the front end from Mounted Cop (3) and Gym Too (9). The first named is now back with a trainer who won with him in November. Gym Too faded badly on his reappearance. He may do better second time back.

A speed duel sets things up for the likes of DEFICIT HAWK (7). He’s found one too good on all his three starts at this current meet. He won twice last autumn so maybe this is his time of year. Quick Posse (5) finished well behind him last time. That was his first run since November. He is a price chance. So too is Fifty Eight O G (6). He finished well behind Dean Verdile (1) last time but did take a big step forward from his comeback. He’s inconsistent but could be the surprise package in here.

Selection: Deficit Hawk (7)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Deficit Hawk (7) and Dean Verdile (1)                      Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Deficit Hawk (7) and Quick Posse (5)                      Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Deficit Hawk (7) and Fifty Eight O G (6)

Finger Lakes Race 3 (7.04pm)

Maiden Claiming $5,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – 1 Mile 40 yards - Dirt

SWEETEST PARTY (4) came back to his best when a well held runner up at this level at the start of the month. The winner was a horse with a bit more class who had too much pace for him. There doesn’t appear to be that type in this line up. Off that run, he holds Takazak (9) and Theresa's Boy (1) who were five plus lengths behind him. His trainer James Acquilano is in decent form and he has a super record in maiden claimers.

Sweetest Party (4) has more stamina than speed so could be vulnerable if the early fractions are sedate and/or something gets an easy lead. My Name's Forrest (3) may be the one for the latter category. He’s  stalked the pace and faded badly in a trio of sprints so far. He gets a class drop and more importantly meets slower horses that he may be able to boss early on.

Honorable Gibson (5) ran evenly over five furlongs on turf at Fort Erie last month. He has form on dirt. That was in a sprint. His one try over a route trip came when in too deep in a maiden special weight. He should show a lot more here. He’s at lot easier to evaluate than John Want Revenge (6). That three-year-old makes his local debut after being hopelessly overmatched in maidens at the big New York tracks.

Selection: Sweetest Party (4)

Finger Lakes Race 4 (7.31pm)

Maiden Special Weight – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – 1 Mile 40 yards - Dirt

A pair of shippers from the big New York tracks will take money here. Dancing Slippers (5) has been trying maiden special weight company. She’s not come close in a trio of starts since she returned in June but did run second in one at Aqueduct last March. This is a massive drop in class and career start number twenty one could be a charm.

Flattering Eyes (7) ran a decent fourth in a maiden claimer at Saratoga last month. Her best form is on a par with Dancing Slippers (5) and she has finished ahead of her a couple of times in the past. On form, she is very playable. She did get ironed out on her one previous start here last autumn.

Just Stay Home (4) and AFLEETING GLANCE (6) look the best of the locals. They filled the places at a safe distance behind a new face to Finger Lakes who freaked in maiden early this month. The first named split two decent yardsticks the time before and looks pretty solid. Afleeting Glance was trying dirt for the first time after three races on turf at Belmont and Saratoga. Like Just Stay Home (4), she needs the shippers to run a bit below form. That is possible and her taking another step forward second time with trainer Jeremiah Englehart.

Lofty Reason (2) and Dark Love (3) step up from sprints. The first named stumbled badly and lost all chance second time out after making a fine debut. Dark Love ran evenly on his first start. He’s bred to handle today’s distance and could improve a lot as a result.

Selection: Afleeting Glance (6)
Longshot: Dark Love (3)

Finger Lakes Race 5 (7.58pm)

Claiming $5,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of 2 races lifetime – 1 Mile 40 yards - Dirt

This looks a deep race for the level with trainer Jeremiah Englehart having two live chances. Cray Cray (1) improved second time here to go down by a neck in a similar event last month. Icey Cash (12) also came back to something like his old form to finish less than three lengths behind him. The winner has scored again since giving the form a very solid look.

Fridaybeers (3) is a barn mate of the rail drawn runner. He improved for the step up in distance to beak his maiden here at the start of the month. The runner-up Sweetest Party runs in Race 3 today so there should be a late clue to his chances. Like Cray Cray (1) and Icey Cash (12), he started off his career in better races at bigger tracks and like them may be capable of further improvement.

Honorable Union (10) and ONESHOTATFOREVER (8) were third and fourth in a slightly higher priced claimer here last time. That looked a decent contest. Oneshotatforever was fancied to make a winning local debut after showing form at the Big New York tracks. He’s a possibility at a biggish price. So too is Grammi Dance (11). He’s had excuses for his last two runs. He has speed in a pretty paceless affair.

Craigville Beach (7) had placed form in allowance events. The drop in class into a claimer didn’t work the oracle last time. Maybe a further class relief will do.

Selection: Oneshotatforever (8)

Finger Lakes Race 6 (8.25pm)

Claiming $5,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of 3 races lifetime – 6 Furlongs - Dirt

Irish Roar (12) has lots going for him. He’s tried a couple of much races since he came here last month. In the first, he was narrowly beaten. The latest can be forgiven as he raced on the slowest part of the track. He gets a big drop in class into a restricted claimer. His outside draw should mean he gets a no excuse stalking trip.

WASJUANNOWPAUL (6) could be the value play in here. He won his first two starts here before running no race over a mile at Laurel last December. His comeback run can be forgiven. Not only was it a very deep race but he broke slowly and raced on a dead rail. His rider that day prefers to stay with Irish Roar (12) which is understandable. New pilot Reylu Gutierrez has been picking up plenty of live mounts since moving his tack from Saratoga last week.

Shanghai Noon (5), Cool Quartet (2) and Got To Like It (8) filled the minor places in a race at this level a fortnight ago. They all have place chances at last here. So too has the luckless Rayo My King (3). He’s found one too good in his last three starts.

Selection: Wasjuannowpaul (6)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Irish Roar (12) and Wasjuannowpaul (6)

Finger Lakes Race 7 (8.52pm)

Allowance (second level) – New York bred 3 year olds and upwards – 5 ½ Furlongs - Dirt

Runningwscissors (6) ran two big races here in July and August, winning on the latter occasion. He was well fancied for a race at this level a fortnight ago. He ran poorly, finishing well behind the third place runner Five Star Bunt (6). There was a legitimate excuse as he raced on the rail that was dead that day. He could rebound and will take some beating if he runs to his best.

Lohengrin Two (2) improved off his comeback to wire an entry level allowance field last month. A double up is a possibility. He does go up in class and may have pace partners unless he breaks super sharp. Preference at the prices is for BREEZE BURNER (8). He shaped well on his 2020 return last month, looking dangerous late on only for his run to flatten out somewhat. He won four times last year and off those runs is playable.

Breeze Burner (8) did lose to Zababa (5) and Eddie's Gift (7) in different races last term. The first named has not quite sparkled so far this year. Eddie's Gift is a big player second time back after a long lay off. A trainer change following a claim is a slight worry. It is with Thesis (3) who has the back form to win this.

Selection: Breeze Burner (8)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (6 Bets): Runningwscissors (6), Eddie's Gift (7) and Breeze Burner (8)

Finger Lakes Race 8 (9.19pm)

Claiming $5,000 – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of 2 races lifetime – 5 ½ Furlongs - Dirt

FUNNY PURSUIT (12) came from The Big Apple and has really found her level since running here. She broke her maiden last month. A fortnight later, she ran half a length second in a similar event to this. She’s improving and meets a pretty modest group of one time career winners here. Tribeca Girl (8) faded to finish over six lengths behind her last time. She is lightly raced and has some upside.

Despite the size of the field, there are very few playable alternatives to Funny Pursuit (12). One definitely is Foxy's Edge (10). She ‘ran into one’ when a well held runner-up on her local debut. The winning time was very quick for a race at this level. Off that run, she holds Little Neige (2).

Luzmaria (11) looked great when winning a maiden special weight on her local debut. That came in the slop. She ran nowhere near that form on a dry track next time. She does get a class drop here so has to be reckoned with. The worry with her and Crossing Alaska (9) is they seem to need a wet track to run their best races.

Shanghainess (1) has speed. He gets a class drop and blinkers on. If the rail is not dead, she’s a wire to wire chance at a big price.

Selection: Funny Pursuit (12)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Foxy's Edge (10) and Funny Pursuit (12)
