A look at a map wasn’t enough to put off Christian Williams recently, when from his West Wales base touching the Irish sea at Ogmore-By-Sea he sent a team of three horses some 272 miles to Fakenham which nestles not too far from the North Sea on the Norfolk coast.
The arduous trip was rewarded in full as Cap Du Nord, Massini’s Dream and Strictlyadancer made it a red-letter day for the Welsh wizard as his travellers completed a hat trick at combined odds of just under 77-1.
Williams will travel far and wide in search of winners but a dream came true in December when stable star Potters Corner struck gold on home soil when giving him his most prestigious success to date when landing the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow by a 1¾ lengths from Truckers Lodge.
Christian, who has notched 17 winners in all this term, said: “It’s been brilliant really – I knew it would be tough as everything went right for us last year and I was working with a team of well-handicapped horses.
“This year I knew it would be tougher but we’re well on our way to matching our total of 27 winners and won a Welsh National which helps our profile. If I can get to 25 winners with the knowledge that we’ve won a Welsh National, then it will have been a great season.”
Williams can be guaranteed to have his compass set in all directions in search of those winners and kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his prospects in the coming months.
